I'm in the process of upgrading my laptop from LFS 8.0 to 8.1 and I noticed this instruction in the second-pass build of gcc and wondered about it. The previous step rebuilt binutils, so the native ar and ranlib in /tools/bin should be the first ones that the top-level configure script finds if nothing else is specified. Why are these not acceptable? Just curious.
